Is Joshua Tree Open for Campfires Right Now?

Short answer: it depends on when you're reading this, and the only way to know for certain is to check the park's own live alerts page before you go. Here's what's actually on the record, and why we're not going to give you a flat "yes" or "no" without a current, dated source behind it.
What the National Park Service's own 2026 schedule says
The National Park Service's "Summer Seasonal Closures and Restrictions" page states that Joshua Tree National Park's 2026 seasonal fire restriction ran June 15 through October 1, 2026. During that window, the restriction was park-wide: no campfires, no charcoal fires, and no open flames anywhere in the park — including backcountry sites and campgrounds. NPS last updated that page on August 3, 2026.
If you're reading this after October 1, 2026, that stated window has already closed. But here's the honest caveat we want to be upfront about: we have not found a 2026-dated NPS announcement specifically confirming that restrictions have been lifted for this October. The only "restrictions lifted" article we could locate is from 2023, and using it here would mean presenting old news as current fact — something we won't do.
So rather than tell you campfires are open right now, we'll tell you exactly what we know: per NPS's own posted 2026 schedule, the restriction period ran June 15 through October 1. Always check the park's live alerts page or the NPS app before your trip — fire conditions, red-flag warnings, and local closures can change quickly and are sometimes issued with very little notice.

None of these take more than a couple of minutes, and they're the only way to get a same-day answer — not a blog post written in advance of your specific trip.
What the rule usually looks like outside restriction periods
Outside an active fire restriction window, campfires in Joshua Tree are typically allowed only in designated fire pits or fire rings at the park's drive-up campgrounds — not in the backcountry, and not outside a fire ring even at a campground. And this is a standing rule, not a 2026-specific one: campfires are never permitted during red-flag fire-weather warnings, regardless of the season or the status of any seasonal restriction. A red-flag warning can go into effect on short notice, so "the seasonal restriction has ended" and "you can safely have a campfire today" aren't automatically the same thing.
If a campfire in the park isn't in the cards, there's still a fire pit waiting for you
If you're planning a Joshua Tree-area trip and the in-park campfire situation is uncertain, unavailable, or just not part of your plans, you don't have to give up the fire pit evening entirely. At Wanderlust, our desert home in Wonder Valley includes its own smokeless fire pit — a standing, year-round amenity at the property, not something tied to the park's seasonal rules at all. After a day of hiking or exploring the park, you can come back, build a fire, and sit under the desert sky without needing a park permit, a campground reservation, or a check of NPS's conditions page.
It's a small thing, but it solves a real problem: the park's fire rules are genuinely restrictive for a large part of the year, and even outside that window, conditions can change fast. A fire pit at your own stay doesn't depend on any of that.
The bottom line
NPS's 2026 seasonal fire restriction ran June 15–October 1, 2026, park-wide, no exceptions for backcountry or campgrounds.
No 2026-dated NPS source confirms restrictions have been lifted for this October — check the park's live alerts page or app for today's actual status.
Outside a restriction window, campfires are generally allowed only in designated fire pits at drive-up campgrounds, and never during a red-flag fire-weather warning.
If you want a guaranteed fire pit evening without checking park conditions at all, Wanderlust's own smokeless fire pit is available to guests year-round.
