Pioneer Days Twentynine Palms 2026: A Family Weekend Guide to the 90th Annual Celebration

Some towns mark their history with a plaque. Twentynine Palms throws a weekend.
From October 15 through 18, 2026, Pioneer Days returns for the 90th time. That is ninety years of a small high-desert town clearing its calendar for a parade, a 5K, and the Outhouse Races, a long-running tradition that sounds exactly as gloriously odd as its name. This year the celebration has a theme that fits the milestone: "A Century in the Making," a nod to the 100th anniversary of the town's historic Old Schoolhouse.
If you have been looking for a reason to bring the whole crew out to the desert this fall, this is a good one.
What's on the Weekend
These are the pieces that make Pioneer Days what it is:
The parade. It's the centerpiece, the moment the town comes out to the street together.
The 5K. For the early risers in your group, or the ones who need to burn off energy before the rest of the day starts.
The Outhouse Races. One of the event's long-running traditions, and the part your kids will still be talking about on the drive home.
One honest note before you plan anything around a specific hour: the full day-by-day schedule hasn't been published by the organizers yet. We're not going to guess at which event lands on which morning. Check back with the local organizers closer to the weekend before you lock in times.
KidsFest: Saturday Evening, October 17
Running alongside the weekend, KidsFest takes over the Community Center on Saturday, October 17, from 5 to 9pm, according to the City of Twentynine Palms' program listing. If you're traveling with younger kids, it gives the weekend an evening anchor: a full day out, then something built just for them as the sun goes down.
Where Wanderlust Fits In
A four-day town celebration is a lot of togetherness, which is the point. It also means that by the end of each day, most groups want somewhere to land that belongs only to them.
Wanderlust Joshua Tree sits on five private acres in Wonder Valley, just outside Twentynine Palms. You get wide-open desert views and no shared walls or common areas: no hotel hallway, and no one in the next room who isn't part of your group. Inside there are three bedrooms, six beds and two bathrooms. There's a fully equipped kitchen with a coffee/tea bar for slow mornings before the parade, and dining for eight when everyone ends up around the same table.
Back outside, the afternoon or evening belongs to you. Board games and cornhole cover the in-between hours. A fire pit holds the end of the night, when the kids are winding down and the adults finally get to sit.
We haven't measured the drive from the property to the Community Center or the parade route, and we won't estimate it. If timing matters for your plans, especially around KidsFest's evening hours, map it yourself before you book.
